In this station, you will learn:
- personal pronouns to address people informally (ty “you”) and formally (vy “you”)
- the alphabet
- vocabulary (cognates)
- how to get acquainted informally and formally
- how to introduce yourself

Online Component
Activity types
Alongside texts, audio and video materials, the online component consists of the following activity types:- Cards. Instructions: study a set. Click on the audio icon to hear the recording. Click on the card to flip it to study new vocabulary. After listening to
- Learn. Instructions: type a corresponding term or translation of a word in the blank. Click the ‘Check’ button to check the answer.
- Scatter. Instructions: drag corresponding items onto each other. Click the ‘Check’ button to check the answer.
- Speller. Instructions: Instructions: type what you hear. Press the play button to hear the recording. Type your answer in the blank. Click the ‘Check’ button to check the answer. Click the ‘Next” button to move to the next slide.
- Quiz / Stop. Instructions: test yourself. Answer written, matching, multiple choice or true/false questions. Once you are finished, click the ‘Check’ button and receive instant feedback. For your quiz completion to be recorded, make sure you are logged in before taking a quiz.
- Forum. Instructions: share your answers with other students in the comment section of the Forum.
- Handwriting. Instructions: rewrite a text following a video and bring it to class.
- Written assignment. Instructions: prepare a written assignment and bring it to class. Submit it to the teacher in handwriting and be ready to present it in class.

Personal Pronouns ти “you” and ви “you”
| ty (in Ukrainian spelled as ти) | The singular form of “you” – ти – signals familiarity. It is used when addressing friends, relatives, children and other students. For instance, in the classroom a student to a student will use the ty form. |
| vy (in Ukrainian spelled as ви) | The plural form of “you” which is also a respectful address form – ви – is required for formal situations, as well as those in which relationships are considered at an introductory stage. For instance, in the classroom, a professor speaking to student or a student to a professor will use the vy form. |

Ukrainian Keyboard
To complete written assignments in this course, you will require a Ukrainian keyboard installed on your computer, tablet or mobile device. This is what you need to know about the two types Ukrainian keyboard layout and how to install them on your devices.
Installing the Ukrainian Keyboard
Go to the menu option For Students > Ukrainian keyboard.
Standard vs Phonetic Layout
There are two main Ukrainian keyboard layouts: standard (ЙЦУКЕН) and phonetic (sometimes also called mnemonic/homophonic).
Standard keyboard layout
This is the default keyboard layout for desktop and mobile devices and is the most commonly used in Ukraine. However, it has a steeper learning curve for an English-speaking person.
Phonetic keyboard layout
This keyboard layout is popular with Westerners learning Ukrainian as it maps the Ukrainian letters to the English qwerty keyboard so that the letters either have the same sound or same shape.
For example, Ukrainian М is very similar to English M in appearance and sound. Other letters such as Д look less similar, but this letter has the same sound as an English D. And Ukrainian X is matched with English X based on the similar shape.
