c Why do you think these dates are important for Ukrainians? Which dates are important in your country or for you personally?

b Exchange your notes with your partner. Ask and answer each other’s questions in order to find out why these dates are important for your partner. Follow the pattern.

  • Дев’ятнадцяте грудня важлива дата для мене, бо це День Святого Миколая. У цей день я отримую подарунки.

a Read the text. What is “Shchedryk”?

Чи ви знаєте пісню «Щедрик»? Певно, що знаєте. Можливо, ви не знаєте, що це українська народна пісня. Бо ця пісня більш відома у світі як “Carol of the Bells”. Але, насправді автором пісні є український народ. Ця пісня, або щедрівка, є традиційна і українці співають її на Старий Новий рік (тринадцятого та чотирнадцятого січня). У 1916 році український композитор Микола Леонтович пише музичне аранжування до пісні. До Америки щедрівку привозить український національний хор у 1921 році. Щедрівка стає дуже популярною піснею, і Пітер Вільховский пише англомовну версію “Щедрика”. Ось так український “Щедрик” стає “Carol of the Bells”.

В тебе жінка чорноброва. you have a dark-eyebrowed [beautiful] wife.”
